The First Step

Now that you have started training your dog, what is the first step? We need to lay a foundation for training so that we can be successful. The first thing is that we put ourselves in a position of being a leader. That does not mean that we need to be meaner or stricter. It does mean that we have to be in a position to influence our dog for a positive outcome and change for the better.

The steps to establish a foundation are

1 become a leader
2 stop letting the dog continue any bad habits
3 make a plan for training
4 change the dogs frame of mind that allows it to learn new things in a new way
5 assess the plan and make adjustments

In my future posts I will go through each of these steps so you too can lay a foundation for a “positive, reward based, causative leadership” training program for your dog.
